Author description

Patricia Harris and David Lyon (chapters 1-13 and 16-20) have journeyed the world for American, British, Swiss, and Asian publishers to write about food, culture, art, and design. They have covered subjects as diverse as elk migrations in western Canada, the street markets of Shanghai, winter hiking on the Jungfrau, and the origins of Mesoamerican civilization in the Mexican tropics. In the name of research, they have eaten hot-peppertoasted grasshoppers, English beef, and roasted armadillo in banana sauce. When good wine or craft beer is unavailable, they drink Diet Coke. Wherever they go, they are continually drawn back to Spain for the fl amenco nightlife, the Moorish architecture of Andalucia, the world-weary and lust-ridden saints of Zurbaran, and the phantasmagoric visions of El Greco-and the sheer joy of conversing with the regulars in a thousand little bars while drinking the house wine and eating tapas of Manchego and chorizo. Neil Edward Schlecht (chapters 1, 3, 14, 15, and 19) is a freelance writer based in northwestern Connecticut. His fi rst exposure to Spain was teaching English for a summer at a Col*legi Sant Ignasi in Barcelona. He returned to the Catalan capital just before the 1992 Olympics and spent most of the decade there, working on social and economic development projects for the European Union and later as a contributing writer for a Spanish art and antiques magazine. Neil is the author or co-author of a dozen travel guides, including Frommer's Peru, Frommer's Cuba, Frommer's South America, Frommer's New York, Frommer's Texas, and Spain For Dummies. But little motivates him like the chance to discover new restaurants and wines in Spain.
