Weapons of Mass Delusion: When the Republican Party Lost Its Mind
Author(s): Robert Draper
Liz Cheney marveled at her current predicament. As a child surrounded by Republicans, she had strained to imagine what it would be like to attend a Democratic convention. It's like a different planet, she would think. But what planet was she on now? Referring to the audio tapes of Republican leaders reacting to January 6, Cheney said, "Listening to the tapes was a reminder that there was a moment when the Republican Party hadn't lost its mind. You listen to the leaders on the call reacting to a situation and you're like, 'Those people are adults. They're rational.'" Cheney believed that it would take more than one cycle for the GOP to regain its sense of reason. If Trump were to become the nominee in 2024, she felt certain that the party would suffer a fracture that could not be mended. And if the GOP continued to embrace the lie that Trump's victory had been stolen from him, then in her view the party was beyond salvation. Book jacket.
